Aim of the project
The malddaba (MAmmaLian Demographic DAtaBAse) database is an online database, freely available, that compiles age- and sex-specific demographic data (e.g. survival, reproduction) for a wide range of mammalian populations. This database is therefore a unique data resource for researchers in many scientific fields (e.g., evolutionary biologists, ecologists, demographers, or biogerontologists) who wish to undertake comparative demography projects. Thanks to the data compiled, it is possible to further quantify actuarial and reproductive senescence patterns (e.g. through the estimation of the age at the onset of senescence and rate of senescence) as well as to derive key demographic parameters from population projection matrices or life tables.
The malddaba database also contains additional information retrieved from the studies where the age-specific demographic data have been extracted. This includes, among other things, the exact location of the population (with geographic coordinates), the sample size, the duration of the study, the starting year of the study, and the type of data (longitudinal, cross-sectional data recovered from the census of living or dead individuals).
So far malddaba contains demographic data for more than 279 populations encompassing 181 species of mammals living in markedly different ecological contexts. Our database will be updated regularly and age-specific data on functional traits (e. g. body mass) will be soon incorporated in the database.
